For many people, enrolling in Medicare comes with one big surprise: it doesn’t cover everything.
Original Medicare does an excellent job of helping pay for hospital stays and medical care, but you’ll still be responsible for certain costs along the way. That’s where Medicare Supplement Insurance comes in.
Also known as Medigap, Medicare Supplement Insurance is designed to help pay some of the expenses that Original Medicare leaves behind. If you’ve heard the term but aren’t quite sure what it means, don’t worry, because that’s what our team at McKnight & McKnight Insurance is here to help with. Let’s discuss:
Think of It as Filling the Gaps
When you receive medical care, Original Medicare generally pays its approved share first. Depending on the service, you may still owe deductibles, copayments, or coinsurance. A Medicare Supplement plan helps cover many of those remaining expenses, reducing the amount you pay out of your own pocket.
It doesn’t replace your Medicare benefits. Instead, it works alongside them. For many retirees, that added layer of coverage brings peace of mind because unexpected medical bills become a little less…well, unexpected.
What Does Medicare Supplement Insurance Help Cover?
Plans are standardized, meaning a Plan G (Medigap plan) provides the same basic benefits regardless of which insurance company sells it. The biggest differences are usually the monthly premium, customer service, and pricing.
Every Medicare Supplement plan is a little different, but many can help pay for expenses such as:
- Part A hospital coinsurance
- Part B coinsurance or copayments
- Skilled nursing facility coinsurance
- Hospice care coinsurance
- Blood transfusions beyond what Medicare pays
- Certain deductibles, depending on the plan you choose
What Isn’t Covered?
One of the biggest misconceptions is that a Medicare Supplement plan covers every healthcare expense. It doesn’t.
Most plans do not include:
- Prescription medications (you’ll typically enroll in a separate Medicare Part D plan if you need this coverage)
- Routine dental care
- Vision exams or glasses
- Hearing aids
- Long-term custodial care
Can Anyone Enroll?
To purchase a Medicare Supplement policy, you must already have Original Medicare Part A and Part B.
The ideal time to enroll is during your Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment Period. During this six-month window, you generally have guaranteed issue rights, meaning insurance companies can’t deny coverage or charge you more because of your health history.
While you may still be able to apply later, your options can become more limited depending on your coverage needs and individual circumstances.

Medicare Supplement vs. Medicare Advantage
These are often confused, but they’re two completely different approaches to Medicare coverage. A Medicare Supplement plan works with Original Medicare by helping pay your share of eligible costs. Medicare Advantage plans are an alternative way to receive your Medicare benefits through a private insurance company. These plans have their own provider networks, coverage rules, and out-of-pocket limits.
McKnight & McKnight Insurance Note: You can’t be enrolled in both at the same time.
Is a Medicare Supplement Plan Right for You?
There’s no universal answer because everyone’s healthcare needs are different. If you value predictable medical expenses, travel frequently within the United States, or simply want fewer surprise bills, a Medicare Supplement plan may be worth considering. On the other hand, someone who rarely visits the doctor may decide that another option better fits their budget.
That’s why it’s helpful to talk with one of our independent agents who can explain your choices without all the confusing insurance terminology.
